We
live in a networked and highly interdependent society. At the same
time, there are signs that natural resources are becoming scarcer and
environmental consequences of human activities may compromise the
subsistence of future generations. Governments and transnational
organisations have acknowledged the necessity of transforming current
unsustainable habits and practices towards a more sustainable and
harmonious development, and thus society in general is becoming more
sensible to these issues. Therefore, it is not surprising that
community-based initiatives with environmental goals are emerging
beyond the traditional local groupings, sometimes being born first on
the Internet. Information systems have an important role in breeding
these initiatives because they facilitate information sharing and
extensive communication. This project aims at understanding how
information systems contribute to and impact the results of on-line
community-based initiatives.
